General Discussion -> Writers: where are the kid and the old guy?
Interesting thread. Important to note that the degree is not, in fact, mandatory but then you really need the work experience to even it out. Unless you're just mind bogglingly brilliant in your application module, of course. In fact one of our most accomplished senior writers is degreeless, choosing to go straight to work in the dreaded real world. As far as age, we run the gamut. We've got people right out of school and we have people with decades of experience. I care about two things: Can you write great interactive fiction and would you meld with my team. Having at various times been a producer and lead designer in my previous lives I have to say that finding the unique skills and creativity needed for BioWare writers has been the hardest hiring challenge of my career so the last thing we'd do is turn away some amazing talent because they weren't carrying the right piece of paper.

It will be keeping it's bi-weekly schedule but we have increased the amount of pages from three (3) to seven (7) each issue. We also have a few new faces working on it: Written by Alexander Freed (our very own Senior Writer here on TOR), illustrated by Dave Ross, inked by Mark McKenna, colored by Michael Atiyeh, and lettered by Michael Heisler

The Republic on the other hand... there Isn't much to find out.... but if there was, I'd be interested.
That is one of the reasons we created Blood of the Empire. There isn't a lot known about the Sith Empire due to them because they haven't been a part of the galaxy's history records since the Great Hyperspace War. This series will give the readers more insight into their culture and why the Sith are who they are today.

I have a feeling that Blood of the Empire will also take place over three acts, leading up to a published TPB - and then perhaps a new webcomic series to complete the trilogy (perhaps called "Blade of the Republic" or something??).
Interesting idea...

That is correct; we haven't stated when exactly the prison was created... only that it was constructed by the Rakatan Empire (or Infinite Empire) which means it would be a good guesstimate to think it was crafted between 31,000 BTC and 21,000 BTC.

We do our best to stick with a semi-transparent schedule but most of that also depends on the development team. We do our best to ensure that anything we put on the site is information that won't have to change too much (if at all) before we launch the game. We don't want to put up something on the site that we "think" will be in the game only to be removed or re-prioritized till later because it gives the community the wrong expectations. So, before we think about releasing anything, we check with the rest of the team to ensure they are confident on the state of it and then do our best to capture their work in an interesting way, get it all approved, translated (remember, we do our best to release everything simultaneously to our entire community in English, French, and German), and then out to the community.

This all depends on what you consider "new info". A lot of people love the planet updates, Timelines, Developer Dispatches, etc. Others want more details on game mechanics (understandably); they want to hear more about character creation and development and a variety of other unanswered questions. And the answers will be coming but like I said above, we will only be releasing it when the entire team is confident on the information we are releasing. And when we do, we'll make sure everyone knows about it; social network updates, newsletters, etc.

One of the things you have to keep in mind is the state of the galaxy. If you've been following the archives of Master Gnost-Dural, the Threat of Peace, or the Sacking of Coruscant, you'll know that the Galactic Republic was in a bad spot. The Republic was essentially strong-armed into the Treaty of Coruscant. This wasn't a war the Republic even saw coming and something the Sith Empire has been staging for a long time. When your enemy has had the time to study your defenses, to tamper with your politics, and attack en masse when you didn't even know you were going to be in a war... it quickly puts you on the defense.

That said, that was tweeted on my personal account and not the official TOR twitter account so don't read too much into it. If it was something big, we'd definitely make mention of it in the latter and not just on my account.

You are given the choice of helping the cultists or simply killing them and their leader; helping them is considered evil, to the point that a couple of your party members will desert you there and then for doing so, but thier leader is actually a pretty tough fight for someone who is un-experienced or on a tough setting. So naturally I wanted to try and 'pay lip-service' to him, ie/ agree to help him but then in the end just stab him in the back becuase he is a complete maniac.

Unfortunenatly thats not possible, and by attempting to do so I pissed off alot of my team majorly, this was on my first playthrough of course and I didnt realize that to actually tell a lie there had ato be a huge (LIE) next to the conversation option. Would be nice to see something less cut and dry for TOR; without over complicating the whole thing of course.

In general I was pleased with the flexibility DA:O gave me in being duplicitous and Andraste's Ashes struck me as one of the places where it seemed to work really well. I hadn't realized the degree to which having a persuasive character affected things until then.

I can't count the number of times I had to tell Alistair "Just trust me on this!" or Morrigan "By that logic why don't I just [do X horrible] thing to you and see if you feel the same way." I didn't have Morrigan in my party at the time, so perhaps this is a choice where even a smooth talker would not be able to circumvent the problem.

I agree wholeheartedly with intentions being the measure of moral alignment under normal circumstances, but incorporating it into a video game complicates matters greatly.

Since a game is finite we have to narrow down what would normally be a near infinite number of approaches to any given situation to only a few. Within these limits it's our job to pick a range of options that gives the player enough diversity to role-play and we have to communicate as clearly as possible what those options are so the player isn't unpleasantly surprised because a choice isn't quite what they thought it would be. In that sense we have to assume that when the player selects an option they are doing so "in earnest," playing at face value, because it's impossible for a designer to know the player's intention for selecting any given option.

The tricky part is trying to then add additional layers of intent onto the same choice. For example, if I accost the player with a group of thugs working for a local crimeboss, and those thugs indicate that the player can avoid an unpleasant demise if the player agrees to poison a close associate. A player might agree to the task only as lip service to get out of a fight, without ever intending to follow through on it. It's up to me to either make it 100% clear that by choosing that option you fully intend to poison your friend, or I need to account for your deception and present other options later.

Because choices can be ambiguous it's best to try and assign points on the alignment scale based on action rather than intent. In the above example, the player shouldn't get darkside points until they reach the point of no return, in this case going through with the poisoning.

This obviously, doesn't address everyone's concerns, but I hope it'll reassure everyone that we're doing our best to avoid hanging you out to dry with a bad decision.

Writer Joanna Berry brings to light some thoughts behind crafting the Jedi Consular!

"For me, the challenge – and the fun – of writing the Jedi Consular is keeping a sense of balance between intelligence and arrogance, between what’s right and what could win the war against the Empire. A Jedi Consular must sometimes accept the grayer path, the less perfect choice. He or she must make the decisions the Republic can’t, in order to save it."

We will have more info on other classes coming soon. In fact, I believe we've had a blog on most every class except the Jedi Consular so far.

Something to note, there is no "biased" towards the Sith Inquisitor or the Sith Empire. We put out assets when they are ready to be released and some things are ready before others. We have blogs written for various things and, as with any asset in the game, it goes through an approval process to make sure its ready.

Ironically, it wasn't that many months ago where the talk was that the development team was biased towards the Jedi and the Galactic Republic...

This is correct, though the objection is unneeded, as the sentence has been misinterpreted. Apologies for it not being more clear: ""The Emperor of the Old Sith from the Great Hyperspace War, that the Jedi thought they had killed off."

He is the Emperor of the Sith. The Sith are a group that the Jedi thought they had killed off in the Great Hyperspace War. He was not Emperor of the Sith during the Hyperspace War, which is why the Republic have no previous knowledge of his existence.

  • Being Sith and away from the Emperor’s direct influence neither Revan nor Malak followed orders exactly as they were supposed to. Then, of course, Malak betrayed Revan.
  • The Jedi took in Revan and returned him to the light, though as it was not a natural turn for him when he went dark, there was much they couldn’t undo and they decided to remove his memories and hopefully his taint with it. Yes, Revan’s return to the light (and his gender as male) are canon.
  • Later Revan returned to deep space to confront what he knew was out there but how much he actually remembered and how clearly he remembered it is still a mystery, as are the events that followed. What we do know is that it took hundreds of years for the Sith to re-emerge as originally planned.
The rest is all speculation and have fun with that. For those of you convinced that somehow we’re going to destroy KOTOR, I ask you to remember that the creative team (including the lead writer and lead designer) that was in charge of KOTOR’s story is on this staff, working on this game. Trust us that our investment in this lore is at least as strong as yours.
In case anyone missed it, I'd like to point out Daniel's post from above:

Website Feedback and Support -> Game Testing - Issues Signing Up [Oct 1, 2009]

Posted in the stickied Known Issues thread as well...

Hi all,

We've recently encountered an error with the Star Wars: The Old Republic Game Testing sign up page and users of the 64-bit version of Internet Explorer on Windows 64-bit platforms. When using Internet Explorer 64-bit, the system scanning program will either fail, or it will appear to have completed properly and submit your data, but it will actually fail to scan your system or submit your specifications to BioWare.

For this reason, we are encouraging users to either use the 32-bit version of Internet Explorer when signing up for the STAR WARS: The Old Republic testing process, or to switch to another supported browser. If you're on a Windows 64-bit system, you can identify the version of Internet Explorer you are using by bringing up the Task Manager and selecting the Processes tab. Then find iexplore.exe. If you are using the 32-bit version, it will say iexplore.exe *32. If you are using the 64-bit version, it will say iexplore.exe.

To switch to the 32-bit version of Internet Explorer, simply choose the program listed as Internet Explorer (not Internet Explorer 64-bit) program from your Start Menu.

We are in the process of getting more information about this issue in order to find a resolution. We apologize for any inconvenience.

I live in the UK and I am triple checked my details in both my account area and when filling the data in to try and become a tester.

Hi Maxjam,

Macs are not supported at this time since the game is only available for PC.

For your other issue - does your city happen to have a hyphen in the name? If so, try it without the hyphen and let me know if it doesn't work. (This issue should be fixed in an upcoming build)

General Discussion -> Question To Bioware - 30 ATC Or Not?
There has been some confusion about this due to a press release which mis-stated the dates. The time in which the game begins is less than 10 years after the Treaty of Coruscant. In general, we've tried to keep this a little vague, because the Old Republic doesn't take place in a single moment of history but over a period of a few years. Suffice to say, the Treaty's been in place long enough for it to start fraying at the edges.

It's really offensive and politically incorrect not to be able to use my home country (which I say again is not a third world country) but being able to use all the other countries.
If your country happens to be one of the ones not currently working, we'd ask that you sign up for Game Testing at a later date. We are currently working to address this issue and when we have it fixed, we'll notify everyone. I know some people want to sign up now because they feel it will give them a better chance to get into our Game Testing program. This is not the case; the order in which people sign up has no bearing on how we select applicants.

We are working on an update that shows all components. Currently, if you have multiple components of a single type (for example, integrated soundcards as well as one in your PCI slot, or Video Cards in SLI), the display is only show the end-user one of those (randomly). In the database, though, we are capturing all components. I went over to the team and looked at the database to verify this... we even have someone who signed up that has four (4) video cards installed in his or her system. Yes, I know... four! One of the updates being worked on will display all components to you before you submit and not just one.

If you haven't noticed it, we announced that we are currently accepting sign-ups for our Game Testing program. If you haven't had a chance yet, please view our Game Tester Frequently Asked Questions.

We recognize and have heard from some of you that there are some difficulties in registering with us, and want you to know that we are working to provide you with ongoing solutions. We will be updating this post regularly with new information.
  • Will signing up today increase my chances of being selected to test Star Wars: The Old Republic?
No, we will be selecting testers from the Star Wars: The Old Republic community based on various requirements such as systems specifications, age, and region. The order in which you sign up for testing has no bearing on the selection process.
  • When I fill out the personal data, it sends me back to the Game Tester Terms & Conditions.
Please ensure that all information is filled out in your BASIC account info and that you have selected (radio button) "Yes, I would like to be considered for testing."
  • The system scan isn't working properly.
Please make sure to have the most recent version of Java installed on your computer (you may have to restart your browser if you install or update Java). Also, ensure that you are accepting the ActiveX request at the top of the page.
  • I'm using Windows Vista but the System Scan doesn't appear to be working
We have not been able to verify this ourselves, but numerous users running Vista have said that installing Service Pack 1 has alleviated their issues with the System Scan utility.

  • I receive an error message stating that my Phone Number is too long.
You only need to enter your city code and the phone number. The formatting isn't important. If you've used the international country code (i.e. 0049 or +49 for Germany), it may be that the number is too long.
  • When I have to re-do the Contact Information after being sent back to the Terms & Conditions, the Country is always reset to the United States.
This is a known issue. Please make sure, that you're entering your respective country on every try (Germany, Swiss or Austria), to be selected for the according test phases!
  • I have not received my validation email yet when attempting to sign up.
The Old Republic community members using either Hotmail or Yahoo email providers may not be receiving transactional emails at this time. This includes validation and password recovery emails. We are looking into the situation and will update you when we can.
  • I have not received an email after signing up.
An email is not sent out when you have finished signing up. You will see a congratulations message on the Tester Portal, though.

If you are having a problem that isn't listed above or none of the above fixes the issue you are having, please reply here. Also, please be as detailed as possible in your post, specifying what browser and operating system you are using (to include what version).

I would like to point out that we are doing Game Testing sign-ups; we have not done any announcements about "beta" testing. As specified in the original article, the Game testing for Star Wars: The Old Republic will be rolled out in several phases over an extended period of time. These test phases will begin with smaller, tightly focused test groups, and later tests will expand.

There should have been a pop-up type message after you completed the scan, letting you know that your system had been scanned, and giving you another chance to make any updates to your account. Thank you for your overwhelming support and interest in our Game Testing program. It’s been a humbling 24 hours. We knew that interest would be high but yesterday the community proved just how highly anticipated Star Wars™: The Old Republic™ is. While we are still experiencing a high degree of traffic, we have brought the service back up and are accepting new accounts and Game Tester applications. UPDATE: Thank you for your overwhelming support and interest in our Game Testing program. It’s been a humbling 24 hours. We knew that interest would be high but yesterday the community proved just how highly anticipated Star Wars™: The Old Republic™ is. We experienced an overwhelming amount of traffic which resulted in having to bring the website down so the team could address the performance and capacity issues.

While we are still experiencing a high degree of traffic, we have brought the service back up and are accepting new accounts and Game Tester applications. We will be continually monitoring the service and do our best to manage the continued volumes of interest. We have also brought up the community section of The Old Republic but please understand that we will take the forums down as necessary to alleviate some of the traffic.

We recognize and have heard from some of you that there are some difficulties in registering with us, and want you to know that we are working to provide you with ongoing solutions. For those of you experiencing issues in signing up, see this thread for more information.

Thank you again for your continued interest!

News and Announcements -> Sign up to test STAR WARS: The Old Republic!
We are excited to announce that we are now collecting information for those interested in applying for the opportunity to test Star Wars™: The Old Republic™. Our goal is to get feedback to help us make the best game that we can.

We will be selecting testers from the Star Wars: The Old Republic community based on various requirements such as systems specifications, age, and region. Because the testing program requires feedback from within the community, you must have an active Star Wars: The Old Republic (“TOR”) community account to participate (no banned accounts). The testing is limited to members who are 18 years of age or older and requires the acceptance of the Game Testing Agreement included in the TOR community sign-up process. Users that meet the requirements of the test and are selected for inclusion in the test program will be contacted via email (so make sure your email address is up to date!).

Game testing for Star Wars: The Old Republic will be rolled out in several phases over an extended period of time. These test phases will begin with smaller, tightly focused test groups, and later tests will expand.

Want to get your name on the list of potential testers? First, make sure you are a registered member of the Star Wars: The Old Republic community. Be sure to check the box to indicate you are interested in becoming a tester. If you’re already a member, go to the Game Testing Portal to begin the sign up process.

Please keep in mind that there are no guarantees that you will be selected once you have completed the sign up process. For more information about testing Star Wars: The Old Republic, take time to read the Game Testing FAQ

We look forward to your help in making Star Wars: The Old Republic a success!

Character Classes -> An idea for class choice

I always had to make sure my deceased parents left me the family heirloom of an ebon dagger because otherwise it was impossible to kill the imp that blocks your path right off the bat.

I have always been in favor of this sort of thing. It's a great method to set someones play style to the right build. And you can always disregard it if you want.
Ahh, Daggerfall. You have good taste. That game was very near and dear to my heart.

I believe the opening questionnaire is a staple of Bethesda games. I don’t know if they started that in Daggerfall or Arena, but I thought it was a nice idea. I’m more the “hands-on customization” type, so I never took the recommendations, but I was always curious to see what it would decide. Heck, it’s why I sat through the G.O.A.T. three times in Fallout 3.

I hated that Imp. He may have been immune to iron, but he was never immune to my Knuckle Sammich!

Ever drain all your stat points out of Luck? It can be pretty amusing. After completing that starting dungeon I made camp just outside. My rest was interrupted by a wandering monster and I woke to the dulcet tones of a blood curdling otherworldly wail. I had just enough time to mouse over “You see an Ancient Lich” before it blasted my level two character into some sort of viscous soup.

Surveys and Polls -> What will you do?
The situation on board the Black Talon has become critical. Citing self-preservation as his motive, the veteran captain has disobeyed a direct order to engage a Republic ship – an act of insubordination dangerously close to treason.

The clock is ticking down to an imminent attack by a Jedi boarding party. You are onboard as a representative of the Emperor. He will be very displeased if the Black Talon fails its mission and falls to the Republic.

The time has come to prove yourself to your master. What will you do?
  • Advise the captain that cooperation is in everyone’s best interests.
  • Relieve the captain of duty…with your Lightsaber!
  • Jedi?! Here?! That’s impossible! What have I told you about talking to strange computers?
Come back next week and see if your choice is played out in our complete Developer Walkthrough video!

Roleplay and Play-by-Post -> Roleplaying Welcome Thread! Post Here First!
Hey Everyone!

I can't speak for the rest of the TOR Community Team, but personally am really glad to see such a large number of Role Play, Story, and Fan Fiction driven people in our community. From my perspective, that goes a long way towards making this place feel like home!

I've been an active Role-Player for a number of years and learned many valuable life-lessons from the paper and pencil genre. Most notably: "If you are going to leave d4 scattered on your bedroom floor, don't walk around barefoot!"

Currently I'm in an active RP/Raiding guild in a popluar MMO ((Why, yes. I DO believe that my character would tell your character not to stand in the fire.)) and am fortunate that, while we aren't elitists by any stretch of the imagination, most of the people in our story-lines are much better at it than I am. Still learning. Always learning

I haven't really settled on any real persona or back story for when the game releases, but lately have been working on something where I answer people's questions and help them in finding their way around. So if you have questions or issues that need addressing, perhaps we can put a story-line together. *winks almost imperceptibly*

~Erick

First of all, some amazing investigation being done on this thread. As for the above, I notice the assumption seems to be that the ancient Sith spoke galactic basic at home, just because they used the same alphabet...

Fansite Articles and Announcements
Fansite articles and announcements should be posted in the Community Creations forum. If you run a fansite, you can also place a post about it in the Fansite List thread.

Will it contribute to the discussion?
Posts should actually add something of value to the discussion. If they do not, they may be removed. This will especially occur when this is used to "necro" or "bump" a thread.

Public Discussion about Moderation
Any threads or posts discussing moderation or actions taken against an account from the TOR Community Team will be removed from the forums. These discussions should be held with the moderation team and the individual poster. Any escalated disputes with moderation should be sent to bwacommunitysupport@bioware.com.

General Discussion -> Welcome to the STAR WARS: The Old Republic Community!
From time to time, the Community Team must give a member an Infraction. This is a system that is designed to inform a member what they have done to violate the Rules of Conduct and assist them in not doing so again. Users will be notified of Infractions via the Private Messaging system.

For the first offense, a warning is usually given. While a warning does not add any Infraction Points, the warning itself will remain on your account until it expires.

Members are rarely suspended for the first few offenses unless it was something overly derogatory or offensive. That said, the more Infraction Points a member accumulates, the more severe the consequences. Having too many Infraction Points can lead to an account being fully moderated (meaning members of the Community Team must approve each of their posts), suspended for a period of time, or even permanently banned.

Most Infractions only accrue one (1) Infraction Point on their account that exists for thirty (30) days. If you receive more than one Infraction for that particular reason, they will be additive. For example, if you get an Infraction for "Spam" twice within a 30 day span, it will add 30 days to whatever was left from the original Infraction. That said, more severe Infractions add more points to your account and they take longer to expire.

If you accrue too many points, you are placed into various levels of suspension. For example, if you accrue 5 or more points within a timeframe, you will be given a 24-hour cool off period. The more points you accrue after that, the longer the timeout and, ultimately, that account will be permanently banned if the user continues to violate the rules and guidelines of this community.

If you wonder how many Infractions you have, you can view them on your account (click on your name at the top of the page) and look for the Infractions tab (you'll see About Me, Statistics, Friends, Infractions, Contact Info). If you don't see an Infractions tab, that means you don't have any!

Ultimately, the system is in place to make members aware of conduct not appropriate for this community and our goal is to make a place where community members can discuss the various aspects of The Old Republic civilly without being insulted.

General Discussion -> Welcome to the STAR WARS: The Old Republic Community!
Welcome to the Star Wars™: The Old Republic™ Community section on the official website. The Old Republic, also referred to as TOR, is a story-driven massively-multiplayer online game from BioWare and LucasArts. Currently, the game is in production and no launch date has been released. To learn more about the game, visit the Game Info and Frequently Asked Questions sections.

Here in the Community Section, you can talk to other players. We look forward to your participation and want you to enjoy your time here whether you choose to simply follow discussions or actively post. To keep the Community section fun for everyone we strive to maintain mature, constructive conversations and you to help us do the same.

When you are ready to contribute in the Community section, there are three things to consider before posting:
  • Will it contribute to discussions about The Old Republic? - This community has been formed around The Old Republic and most conversations should directly pertain to it.
  • Has it been posted before? – Simply use the Search feature and you’ll know.
  • Is this the right forum? – Each forum has a specific topic it is geared towards and usually has a few subforums within it to help categories topics.
You read and agreed to the Rules of Conduct when you created your account. Those are pretty detailed, so here is a basic set of guidelines:
  • Never insult another community member.
  • Always discuss the topic and give constructive criticism.
  • If you feel someone is violates the Rules of Conduct, do not reply to them; simply report (flag) the post.
  • If someone is being a troll, don’t feed them. Simply do not reply and report (flag) the post.
  • Do not spam or bump; you only need to post it once and there is no need to “bump” your thread for others to see.
  • Do not post or promote pornographic, derogatory, vulgar, or offensive content.
  • Do not post your Display Name in the subject of your post; your Display Name is easily seen by all as the original poster for that topic.
  • We disallow the discussion of political, religious, sexual topics that are not directly related to The Old Republic that are considered volatile or disruptive.
  • Be respectful to all community members; while you may not agree with their opinion, you should not be rude to them.
Note that violating these rules and guidelines can result in your suspension or permanent removal from these forums. This list is not exhaustive and we reserve the right to modify or remove any forum content at our discretion.

And if you’re unsure of anything, simply post here or send a private message to one of the members of the Community Team.

General Discussion -> Quests you want to see in game
Here's a mind bender...

In addition to the deeper quests, ones which don't rely heavily on NPC dialog can easily fit into the world(s). A quest with one dialog completion line works too. What are some thoughts on quests which don't rely on any dialog?
  • holocron runes
  • dormant artifact
  • datapads
  • droid memory cores
  • scrolls / writings
  • ancient wall writings
  • terminal readout
  • encoding/decrypting device
  • following an R2 unit
  • map coordinates
  • etc...

Any fresh ideas?
